Scream Queens at the BFI

The London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival has been re-branded and returns to BFI Southbank as Flare in 2014. Among the treats to be found in the programme is the Scream Queens strand looking at LGBT themes in the horror genre. Alongside the better known examples of homo-horror like Fright Night, The Lost Boys and Nightmare on Elm Street 2, the programmers have dug old “video nasty” Butcher Baker Nightmare Maker, which certainly warrants a look from fans of cult cinema. This is an oddly addictive piece of trash dominated by Susan Tyrell as an unhinged auntie who will go to any lengths to keep her nephew with her. Throw a homophobic cop and a gay teacher into the mix and you have one of those distinctly 70s horror films that so delight the Dream Homers…
